Thank you to everyone who has left comments so far. Let me offer a few replies.
He (or she) isn't really that large. Here is a picture of my wife holding him.
He was crossing a small road out on Cape Cod. The road was warm, but not all that hot. He was walking merrily across it until I approached him. Then, he quickly pulled in his legs and tail. We were concerned that he might become road kill, so we helped him to a safe place.
As to Beau71's comment about my far from wordless response to his post, we're having an interesting discussion about optimizing EntreCard dropping over on his blog. You should check it out.

That is one cool looking tortoise. I was decorating some rocks the other day and sure could have used this picture for reference for my turtle one. :) I am doing a WW blog post too if you care to stop by.

The turtle picture is an Eastern Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina).
