Repairing the social environment— in a small town perhaps we have the option of face-to-face conversation with our neighbors? Getting to know people at social events, town gathering spots, ball fields, and even by regularly taking a walk in the neighborhood may sound old fashioned... but George and Aldous might recognize the power of the sentiment.

Okay, as a southerner (now living in the Midwest), I'll start with your suggestion of celebrating Juneteenth. Yes, I'm very aware of what Juneteenth is (Emancipation Day), and I have always thought it was a cool holiday. But somehow the idea of me, a white southerner, celebrating Juneteenth (going to one of the picnics, throwing my own picnics) seems like cultural appropriation to me. I would definitely go if invited, but it feels kind of like crashing someone's party. Thoughts?

I know, all to well, how challenging it is to not return hatred for hatred, an eye of an eye, but I believe we are called to love even those who have shown pure hatred to us and to our loved ones.

That "senior Anglican bishop" belongs to a breakaway denomination founded expressly to promote hatred against gay people. That is all they believe in. Pure hatred. I am not interested in his idea of"graciousness.

Another thought for any of my Episcopal friends:

Our baptismal vows include:
"Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being?"

Striving for justice and peace among all people includes disagreeing with people on how best to achieve justice and peace, but even in that disagreement we are called to respect the dignity of every human being, including those we disagree with. Vilifying them, belittling them, calling them names, are all part of failing to respect the dignity of every human being. It is failing to live up to our Baptismal Vows.

While I recognize there is a difference between hatred and disrespect, I believe that way too often, in our political discourse, people have crossed the line. How do we understand that line?

Perhaps Matthew 5:21-22 gives us some guidance:

"You have heard that the ancients were told, 'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT MURDER ' and 'Whoever commits murder shall be liable to the court.' "But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, 'You good-for-nothing,' shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever says, 'You fool,' shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell.
